Never rely on one source of funds when you travel. A combination of travellers cheques, some foreign cash and an ANZ credit card* will mean you can pay for your expenses in most circumstances.


We recommend you order your travel money well before your trip – particularly if you live in an outlying or rural area.


When you purchase travellers cheques from ANZ, your receipt will show the serial numbers of the cheques you've been issued. We recommend that you take a photocopy of your receipt and leave it with a friend or relative in New Zealand.


Take the original receipt with you, but keep it separate from your travellers cheques, in case of loss of theft.


Foreign currency notes and travellers cheques of accepted currency can be cashed or credited to your account at any ANZ branch or ANZ Bureau de Change.


You can generally use your credit card* to make purchases overseas. You can also withdraw cash from your credit card account. You can withdraw up to the equivalent of NZ$800 per day, from ATMs, if your credit limit allows it. There is no daily limit on purchases or branch cash advances up to your credit limit. Currency conversion fees apply to overseas transactions. Additional fees apply for cash advances or ATM advances. Interest will be charged from the date of any cash advance.


In many countries you can withdraw money from your New Zealand bank accounts at an ATM using your ANZ MasterCard or ANZ Night & Day card. You cannot use your ANZ Visa to access your bank accounts overseas. Currency conversion fees, as well as overseas ATM fees apply to overseas transactions.

Receiving foreign currency

Tips

The quickest and most convenient way for someone to send you funds from overseas is a Telegraphic Transfer.


Most International Bank Drafts coming into New Zealand will be in New Zealand dollars, but some may be in a foreign currency. Drafts can generally be cashed or deposited into an account.


If you've received a foreign currency cheque, you need to deposit it in your bank account. You cannot cash it. Foreign cheques are subject to the rules of the countries on which they are drawn. Special criteria apply. If you're receiving a larger amount, we recommend you request a telegraphic transfer for security and speed.

Bank accounts in Australia

If you're heading to Australia for an extended period of time, we may be able to arrange a bank account in Australia before you leave with our parent company, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited.

For more information, please contact any ANZ branch or ANZ Bureau de Change. You'll have to visit one of these outlets in person with suitable identification.

You should allow up to six weeks for your account application to be processed.
